Hand Tufted Constructions

Hand tufted rugs are created by stenciling a pattern onto a cloth backing material.  This material is then stretched onto a frame.  The craftsman inserts tufts of yarn into the backing using a hand held, single needle tool.  After the tufting is complete, the rug is removed from the frame and liquid latex is applied to the back.  A secondary backing is applied and the edges are finished.  The surface is sheared to produce a flat surface, and the face pile may be carved at this point.

Hand Knotted Constructions

Hand knotted rugs are the most durable and most prestigious of all constructions.  Knotting is an intricate, labor intensive process, thus taking much longer to create than other rugs.  These rugs are made on a frame called a loom.  Columns and rows of thread called warps and wefts are stretched onto the loom.  Using a piece of wool or other fiber, the craftsman takes one or two warps in the same row and ties a knot around them.  The ends of the yarn become pile of the rug.
